Telescopes – From Space to Semi and Back
"The
most powerful telescope ever built" (Prof. Dr. Roger Bonnet, ESA
Director of Science) – XMM satellite mission launched in 1999
Since its foundation in 1993, Media
Lario Technologies has continuously pursued its participation in space
projects which offer exceptional opportunities in creating innovative
technologies and strengthening competencies.
Thanks to its long-standing
relationship with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the European Space
Agency (ESA), Media Lario Technologies has been capable of validating
and developing its reflective optics and systems for the most advanced
X-ray missions. Media Lario Technologies has participated in the Beppo
SAX, JET-X, and NASA’s SWIFT missions and, most notably, was part of
ESA’s XMM-Newton space observatory project with the most powerful X-ray
telescope ever built. The XMM-Newton was launched in 1999 and is still
orbiting earth.
As the prime contractor in the
XMM-Newton project, Media Lario Technologies successfully designed,
manufactured and tested three flight telescopes and additional test
units and reached an outstanding performance exceeding specifications:
the "XMM-Newton X-ray observatory is fully living up to its promise
with a steady stream of fascinating data" (ESA press release, 76-2000).
The evolution and differentiation of
our manufacturing and system engineering capabilities is allowing us to
serve also the market of the ground based telescopes providing panels
for the main reflectors and the semiconductor processing equipment
market offering reflective optics for illumination optics, and
inspection and metrology systems.
